Setup via QR Code
The GateControl Client can import WireGuard configurations by scanning a QR code via webcam — handy when you have the QR code from the GateControl Web UI or another source.
Prerequisites
- A webcam on your PC
- Camera permission enabled in Windows (Settings → Privacy → Camera)
- A QR code containing a complete WireGuard configuration (e.g. from the GateControl Web UI under Peers → select peer → Show QR Code)
Scan Steps
- Launch the GateControl Client
- Switch to the Settings tab
- Click Scan QR Code
- The webcam activates — a preview window appears
- Hold the WireGuard QR code well-lit and in focus in front of the camera (minimum distance approx. 15 cm)
- Once detected, the configuration is imported automatically and the camera window closes
You can then connect on the Status page.
Tips for Issues
- Make sure the QR code contains a complete WireGuard configuration (including
[Interface]and[Peer]sections) - Try different distances and lighting conditions
- Check that camera permission is enabled in Windows
Limitations Compared to API Connection
- No automatic sync — like .conf import, if the config changes on the server, you need to scan again
- No heartbeat — the server cannot see the client online status
- Manual peer management — the peer must be created on the server first
