Setup via .conf File
If you prefer not to use the API connection, you can import an existing WireGuard configuration file directly.
Prerequisite
You need a valid WireGuard .conf file. You can get one from:
- The GateControl Web UI under Peers → select peer → Download Config
- Your administrator
- Exported from another WireGuard client
Import Steps
- Launch the GateControl Client
- Switch to the Settings tab
- Find the Import Config section
- Click Select File
- Choose the
.conffile and confirm
The configuration is loaded immediately. You can then connect on the Status page.
Limitations Compared to API Connection
- No automatic sync — if the configuration changes on the server, you need to re-import the .conf file
- No heartbeat — the server cannot see the client online status
- Manual peer management — the peer must be created on the server first
